VDB - BUFFER AND SHIPPING SYSTEM FOR POT PLANTS

During this years Horti Fair Visser has introduced its new patented fully automatic buffer and shipping system for potted plants named VDB, Visser Dynamic Buffer system.

The most important advantage compared to other systems is it’s unprecedented flexibility, so not one pot size but for example pot size 9 up to 23 cm in the same buffer. The pot size is just a setting in the computer. It also has a higher capacity and is much more durable with much lower running costs than traditional systems based on conveyors and gutters. Because of it’s integrated irrigation system plants can stay in the buffer for weeks there is almost no limitation in the time the plants stay in the buffer.

The patented VDB system works with an overhead crane with a gripper mechanism to pick up the pots and to move them from the grading line in to the buffer zone and out of the buffer zone to the shipping line with labeling machine, mixing line, sleeving machine etc.

Flexibility and production peaks
Typical of this system is that it is not limited to one pot size. Special software make the system suitable to use different pot sizes at the same time. Most buffer systems are set up for just one pot size with the matching plant sizes. Once this is installed it is almost impossible, or only at high costs, to make changes and therefore it limits your choice of cultivation for several years.
Market developments are changing rapidly and it becomes more and more important to produce what the market asks.  This can force you to grow a wider range of pot sizes over the seasons or years, and also production peaks are getting bigger.

Starting point for the development of the VDB :   Flexible and peaks

How the system works
The VDB is basically a space in the greenhouse of 500 up to 1500 m2 with a hard (concrete) floor and an overhead crane system above it with a gripper mechanism that  collect and move the pot plants with one row at the time.

The system has a number of in- and output conveyor belts. The input conveyor belts are linked, for example, with a camera grading system and each of these belts is a different grade. As soon as one of these belts is completed with pots of a specific grade the overhead crane picks up the pots and put them on the floor. The position of the pots and pot and plant size is stored in the computer system to create a database, which is used to pick up the plants in a later stage.

For taking plants out of the buffer for shipping  the computer determines where the plants are in the buffer and as soon  as the overhead crane is above the row to pick up the pots it knows exactly what is below him, so you can make orders with several pot sizes in succession and the system is sizing automatic. In buffer larger plants are given more room then smaller, that is a setting the operator makes himself so you can create e very efficient use of the space available.

Most important features are:

  • Very flexible, the different pot / container and plant size grades are simply entered and can be adjusted by the operator on the visual display / keyboard.
The system can be used with a wide range of pot / container and plant sizes.
  • High capacity. The capacity of the plants processed over one conveyor is not a limiting factor.
The plants are simply divided over several conveyors.
  • Robust, reliable, low operating / maintenance costs.
This is due to the reduced number of moving parts.
  • Very competitive against systems with conveyors / gutters.
